So many people have changed again... and a lot of them have gone back to normal. I guess it was expected, considering most Malnosso experiments last about a week, but--

...why... am I still here?

Or more importantly, why am I still this age?

I thought I'd be sent back for sure. Is... this how I'll be from now on?

[Seeing Simon smile like that makes it okay in Cloud's book, although he has to give his aged son a strange smile.]

Well, all right. I guess I accept the membership.

[Simon's grin broadens, and he clenches a hand into a fist, strong and steady once more.]

First order of business is to take care of that barrier! We can't be the invincible and free Gurren Brigade when we're locked up like this!

[Like flipping a switch. Cloud quirks his lips, a little confused, but folds his arms and looks down at Simon.]

If you have any ideas, I'll be glad to hear them. The thing is invincible; I think we need more tactics than brute strength concerning that nice little roadblock.

[Simon chuckles faintly, hands going to his hips.]

If aniki were here now, he'd probably say something like "brute force is a great tactic!" He always had the craziest ideas. Anyway, if we're going to break the barrier, we'll need a lot of power. I've dealt with this kind of thing before, and the easiest way to access what's beyond is to overload what's blocking your way!

[Here Cloud looks kind of skeptical.]

I suppose you'll be doing that with Spiral energy?

Of course! What else would I use?

[Simon doesn't let Cloud's doubt cause him to falter. He plans to do everything he can to break everyone free, until the Malnosso send him home or he's successful. Hopefully the latter would come first.]

Good point. [Cloud doesn't want to get his or anyone else's hopes up, but he doesn't know how much good Simon will be able to do. Still, even a plan like that is better than nothing, and if Simon can break the Masamune...well, maybe he can break the barrier, too.]

When did you want to do this?

Well, the main problem is all the kids running around. If we break the barrier but can't organize enough people to attack the Malnosso's base, wherever it is, then all we'll do is anger them. Considering how much power they have, I'm not sure how many people we'd need.

[He has some doubts, of course, but it's nothing he can't overcome with sheer force of will. It's never let him down before, and as Kamina told him often enough, his was the drill that would pierce the heavens. He's already done that, so what the hell could stop him now?]

[Cloud shifts his weight and folds his arms again, nodding.]

Not only that, but it's difficult to organize things here in the first place. We can't use the journals at all, so everything would have to travel by word of mouth, and everyone would have to be informed not to say a word about this in the journals.

Let's aim for the end of the week. We'll check around to see how many people are still old enough to fight, and we'll give it a try.

The Malnosso won't know what hit them!

How should we go about getting word out, Simon? We don't know what's being watched and what isn't. Hell, they might even have spies planted in the village, it wouldn't surprise me.

Talk to the people we trust - find a way to network the info. We'll have to be careful, otherwise they'll suspect something, but I'm sure if we're careful enough we can manage to gather a decent group.

[Pessimist Cloud is pessimistic.] People we trust -people I trust, anyhow- are kind of a rare breed. Even less, people who can fight properly.

[Simon shrugs; he'd been too young before to know who was trustworthy and who was not, and who the strong ones were.]

Well then, maybe we need to take a chance and just believe in people I doubt many of us want to stay here.

Maybe. [But Cloud doesn't sound so convinced.] I'll try to think of some people we can talk to.

[Out of the corner of his eye he spots the drill on the grass and picks it up with a noise of surprise.] Hey, it's fixed! When did that happen?

[Simon blinks, then presses a hand to his forehead, suppressing a groan. Maybe Cloud isn't the best one to help him with this plan right now.]

I fixed it a few minutes ago.

[If Cloud heard the groan, he didn't make any indication of it, examining the drill closely.] It looks even better than it did before, what did you use?

[This time Simon did sigh, keeping his answers short. This was really going to make things difficult...]

Spiral power.

Spiral power can do this too, huh...? [Cloud mused to himself before blinking; major deja vu. He sighed, hanging his head and rubbing at a temple.]

You told me this already, didn't you?

[Simon's tone is dry as he replies - not angry or irritated, but more like resigned.]

Yeah, I did, but that's alright. Maybe you should start writing things down.

I can't just write down everything. [Cloud sighs, and shoulders the little drill, gesturing towards the house.] Although I guess I might have to after all.

[He fidgets for a moment, sheepish and kind of embarrassed.] I'm sorry if it ends up getting on your nerves. I know it's annoying.

Not everything, just the important things.

[Simon smiles, reaching out to lope an arm playfully around Cloud's shoulders, still amused that he'd grown taller than both Kamina and his own father.]

Don't worry about it! It's not like it's your fault. And it's not that big of a deal to remind you when you forget things.

Yeah. [It's not sulking, damn it, it's thoughtful musing. Cloud fiddles with the drill, ducking his head a bit as he traces the grooves with his fingers, the action feeling vaguely familiar.] I'll go find some normal paper to write stuff down on. It'd be kind of stupid to write it all down in my journal.

That's true. You need to remember our plan, and we don't want the Malnosso finding out!

[Simon is wise enough not to ruffle Cloud's hair, even teasingly. That's probably too much.]

We had a plan? [Cloud's tone is dry, and he sends Simon a wry glance.] I thought it was just more along the lines of "smack the barrier until it breaks."
