Denzel helped me find a drill! Now I can dig properly. My hands were getting a little sore... I learned how to move my wings today, too! They feel funny. I didn't get far off the ground, but it was a lot different than jumping. It was kind of fun...

I think I like it here. It was scary at first, but there's a lot of nice people so I feel safe now! The surface is a really neat place to live. It's much better than underground. I still want to dig tunnels, though. Just in case...

I wish Kamina had come with me... he really wanted to see the surface again.

[Simon felt soothed by the hand in his hair, closing his eyes briefly and leaning into the touch. It felt like his father's gentle ruffle, and he could almost hear the man's rumbling approval and quiet pride.]

Maybe... I could bring my journal down with me, and tell you where I am once in a while? Would that be okay?

I think that'll be fine.

[Cloud didn't want to deny Simon one of the few great pleasures he had, but he couldn't help but worry.]

Yay! Okay, I'll do that!

[Simon finally lifted himself up, eyes damp but no longer crying, his smile bright and hopeful. He could still dig! And he was going to make important tunnels all over the village, just to show how useful it was.]

[Cloud nodded and stood, patting Simon's back.]

Thanks, Simon. You'll have to show me all the work you've done when you're finished, okay?

[Simon beamed and blushed. Cloud wanted to see his work! It was so exciting. He made a mental note to make sure the tunnels were big enough for adults.]

I'll show you, sure! I hope you like them! Even if they are just tunnels...

Well, it's got to be something to see. You've been working hard on it for a while.

Mmhm! I have three tunnels already! One goes to the shop where I got my drill, one is an escape from the forest, and the other goes to Zack's house!

[Cloud paused; the floor beneath Simon's bed was ruined.]

These tunnels...don't open up inside Zack's house and the shop...do they?

[Simon blinked, then hastily shook his head.]

No no! Just to the outside. The only tunnel that's inside is the one under my bed. Is that good, or bad...?

[Cloud held out a hand to calm him, extremely relieved.]

No, no, that's fine. I was worried that you'd dug into those places without asking, is all.

Oh... well, I won't do that. Though I think Zack said it was a neat idea...

[Cloud snorted, shaking his head with a quiet chuckle.]

Yeah, sounds like something he'd enjoy. It'd probably become his new front door for our house.

[Simon blinked again, curving his head curiously at Cloud.]

Should I not have made a path to his house? I thought you'd like it, since you're friends...

You're friends, right?

[Cloud paused, scratching the back of his head before nodding.]

...no, it's fine. We're friends.

...Okay.

[Simon smiled again, rocking a bit on his bed.]

Where should I dig next?

Not sure...there's not a lot of places we go.

[Cloud shifted his weight, crossing his arms out of habit.]

Maybe to the clinic?

[Simon brightened, happy to have a goal once again.]

I like that idea. That way if we get hurt and it's too scary to go outside, we can still get help!

Who knows; your tunnels might save someone some day, Simon.

[Cloud smiled before gesturing to the door with his thumb.]

Dinner's in a few minutes though, so go wash your hands, okay?

S-save someone? ... Wow... I hope it does help someone, at least!

[He nodded at Cloud's mention of dinner, hastily scrambling down from the bed and darting past his foster father to do as he was told. Maybe someday, he could be someone's hero, too!]
