[Simon is wandering through the house looking for papa, since he is a bored little child and requires entertainment. Since it's the logical place to look, he pokes into Cloud's room, calling out. A few moments later there's a loud popping sound, like something exploding, and a childish scream, immediately followed by pounding feet and finally, the slam of a door and soft, hiccoughing sobs.

Totally hiding in Cloud's closet now. Stupid Yuffie and her stupid explosives >:| ]

Yeah! I wanna know what a piano is, Papa!

[Simon bounced a little on the spot, one hand reaching up for Cloud to take it.]

M'kay, let's go. [Cloud took Simon's hand in return, making sure to snatch up First Tsurugi and secure the buckles around his waist before leading Simon from the house towards the shop where he'd found the piano.]

Momma's pretty good, but she hasn't been able to play for a while. Maybe she'll remember some songs and let us listen while she practices.

What kind of sounds does it make, Papa? The only music I know is lots of 'boom-boom' stuff and the songs my mom used to sing...

...I'm...not sure how to describe it. [Cloud scratched the back of his head, unsure.] It's a pretty unique sound, the piano...it's because it doesn't just use one kind of way to make sound, I guess. I'm not sure, I'm not really a music major or anything.

Um... [Simon didn't really get it (again) so he shrugged it off and tugged on Cloud's hand.] You can show me when we get there!

You're gonna like the way it sounds. [Cloud gave Simon's hand a little squeeze as he pushed the door open, a little bell tinkling to signal their arrival.] I don't know a lot myself, but I know enough so that you can tell what it sounds like.

I can't wait, Papa! [Simon bounced happily, glancing up at the sound of the bell and picking up the pace without getting too far ahead of Cloud. He didn't want to knock anything over, after all.]

[Nodding to the storekeeper, Cloud led Simon through a few smaller aisles before coming to the piano in the back, smiling. Tifa was going to love it. Bringing Simon in front of him and reaching out to slide up the wooden compartment that protected the keys, Cloud lifted Simon onto the piano bench. Taking the boy's hands, he carefully set them on the keys.]

This is a piano. If you press down on the keys in front of you, you'll hear what it sounds like.

[Simon curved his head to one side, feeling the keys for a moment before gently pressing down on one. The resulting sound made him jump a little.]

Ah! Papa, that's the piano sound? It's so pretty!

[Cloud couldn't help a grin; the kid was just so damn cute. He reached down and positioned Simon's two pointer fingers on the C and E keys, and rested his own on the next G, C and E, waiting for Simon to move.]

Press those two down at the same time.

Um... okay...

[Simon does just that, pressing them both down at the same time as Cloud instructed.]

[Cloud played the chord just as Simon did, reaching over his other shoulder to play two lower Gs for the full effect.]

This is called a C chord. When you play different notes like this at the same time and they sound good together, it's called harmonizing.

H... harmonizing...

[Simon was stunned for a moment, then moved his fingers from one end of the piano to the other, amazed.]

Papa... Papa, there's so many keys! How do you know which ones to press?

Hmm. [Cloud scratched his hair again.]

Well...there's specific ones you press to make certain sounds...I only know a few chords, because I never really took any lessons, I just fooled around mostly. Your mama can probably explain it better than I can, Simon.

[Simon thought for a moment, letting his fingers wander, pressing each key one after another.]

Do... you think she could teach me...?

[...Cloud smiled, reaching down to hug Simon, his chin atop the boy's head.]

I think she'd love to.

[Simon blushed, smiling brightly at the feel of Cloud resting on him, continuing to tap experimentally on the keys. The music chimed gently, making his smile grow. It sounded so pretty...]

I wanna learn... it's kind of fun!

You'll probably be good at it. [Cloud shifted his head and moved Simon's hand, placing his fingers on the keys for a G chord and gently pressing down so that he'd catch the hint and play it.] Although your hands are a little small for some of the more complicated stuff, but you'll grow soon enough.

[Simon blinked as his hands were moved, pressing down experimentally. That sounded much better, so he did it again, visibly pleased.]

How come you think I'd be good?

Call it hunch. That...

[Cloud paused; the topic of conversation was liable to move into the uncomfortable, but he didn't want to treat Simon's blindness as something taboo to talk about. He wanted Simon to be comfortable as possible with it...and the only way to do that was to accept it fully, as a part of Simon, for as long as it would remain as such.]

That, and when a person loses their senses, the others tend to get sharper. Haven't you noticed that your hearing has gotten better?

[Simon's brows furrowed, playing a few more keys and listening closely. It was hard to tell after so long, but... maybe Cloud was right?]

I dunno... but if Papa says so, it's probably true!

You're good at what you set your mind to, anyhow. [Cloud gave Simon another little nudge with his nose before straightening up, his hands on the boy's shoulders as he tinkered on the piano.]

[Simon played the piano a bit more, trying to learn a few little songs of his own - no more than a few notes tossed together - until he tilts his head up, resting it against Cloud's chest.]

When do we get to take it home?

Well, it's kind of big, but once I get Momma's wall knocked down and ready to be rebuilt, I'll take it back to the house. Probably really soon, if nothing happens.

Okay! Did you tell Mama yet? Is she excited?
