Does... does anyone know what I can do to help? I can dig holes and tunnels really quickly... maybe I could help with the barricades? I just... don't know what else...

[Simon is hanging around outside the house he and Kamina have shared for a while, looking rather pathetic, sitting in the dirt and sharpening his drill. The house is way too big and lonely for just one person, especially when he's used to living with someone as loud and outgoing as Kamina, so he doesn't really want to be inside right now.

He's been suitably freaked out since the sacrifice post and hasn't really talked to anyone about it, and with both Cloud and Kamina gone now and the entire village working away at protecting it from whatever's coming, he feels pretty lost in the flow of things. Bother? Console? Harass? W/E D| ]

Miss Raine told me to talk to Caesar, so... I guess I'll start there. [He just has no immediate incentive to do that yet.]

...Do you want to talk to Caesar? [Yes, that's an honest question.]

I want to help. [It's... sort of an answer? But he's awkward with strangers.]

[He nods; that's okay.] Well, everyone could use some help now. We gotta keep everyone safe, right? If you want to do it, then you'll do good at it.

You think so? Just wanting it badly enough makes it possible?

It helps, that's for certain. If you really want something, you work harder for it, and that makes you do better in the long run. You've noticed it, you've had to, when you know someone who's being forced to do something instead of wanting to do it and they don't do as good a job or they go a lot slower.

[That's true. He can remember people who hated digging back in Jiha - Kamina was the best example for that - being just plain terrible at it because they hated the job. But for him, digging had been a source of adventure, and he'd been the fastest in the village.] I guess you're right... I'll find out more about Caesar and try to talk to him.

I don't know Caesar either, but if he's trying to help people, he's probably an okay guy. [And that's Locke's entire philosophy on humanity practically, right there. He's not horrifically complicated.] And I think your brother'd be proud of you for trying to help with all this. You can tell him all about it when he gets back, right?

He'd probably do a better job than me, but I'll have to try, otherwise he'll be disappointed.

You'll try and you'll do good at it. You don't seem like the kind of guy who'd slack off.

I try to work hard. It's just that sometimes I don't always understand what's going on.

Do you not understand something now? I can try to explain, if you need it - might not be the best one to do it, but I can try.

I guess, um... something else is coming, right? So we all have to fight, because we have nowhere else to go. Everyone's so worried...

[...This isn't gonna be a fun talk. Locke grimaces and resettles himself; he isn't gonna just leave the kid feeling this shaky and unsure.] Did you actually see that episode?

You mean... when that man was killed...? [He remembers it well; it probably shows. It's horrifying to remember.]

[And his automatic reaction is to reach out and grip Simon reassuringly by the shoulder, enough to let him know that there's someone there who isn't on the bad guys' side. He's seen enough killing and death - a kid this young shouldn't have to.] That's not gonna happen again, I promise you that. They're not gonna get a chance.

But those things are coming, and we gotta make sure to be ready for them, right? So they won't have that chance. We're gonna protect and help our friends.

[Simon's a little awkward with the touch, but it's strong and unwavering, and that type of grip has always offered him the most support, so he doesn't move away.]

Yeah... we'll all do our best to protect each other. Otherwise, we won't make it...

We'll do our best and we'll win. We've got an army of ridiculously strong people on our side, and now that there's no limit to that power... Things are gonna explode. We'll do it. And we'll do it for all those people who can't do it for themselves. [He wasn't one of those ridiculously strong people, but he wasn't sitting this one out. He was far too much a fighter for the right to even think of it.]

[That earns him a little smile. It's not really on par with Kamina (then again, who is) but the bravado is encouraging.]

[Nah, brothers are special. Locke's just trying to make sure the kid isn't scared entirely out of his mind, and is somewhat prepared for what's coming up - fear can be a healthy preservation instinct, but fear on top of everything else might well get him hurt, or worse.]

Think you'll be okay, then? [He isn't going unless he actually believes the answer.]

[Brothers are special, and he's faced the whole pre-epic-battle anxiety before. This is just the first time he's actually made it to the battle, and without a weapon, besides.]

Yeah... I'll be okay. [And he means it, because he's always okay somehow.]

[Not the most confident, but... he sounds better. Like at least he can get through this. So Locke nods and stands, pulling his bag over his shoulder again.] Okay. I've got some more work to do, so I'm gonna get going, but you take care of youself, all right? Your brother needs to see you doing good when he gets back.

Yeah... I will. [Simon stands as well, dusting himself off.] I've got lots of work to do now. Thanks for your help.

It's nothing. I'm Locke, by the way.
