[Simon's feeling kind of down on his luck today; Denzel's gone, Cloud's still with Tifa, and Anise's kidnapping is sort of the icing on the cake. He's hanging out by the southern river closest to the shop plaza, attempting to skip stones.

Someone come cheer the kid up?]

[What's with the bird? Ah well. It's weird to find someone else who doesn't know how to do it.]

I used to know, but it's been a long time.

[He sets his bags down and crouches to find a rock. The bird hops to his head and seems to have gained a friend by now.]

Aaah, I know how you feel. It's hard to remember things like this after so long, isn't it?

[Simon nods absently, turning the rock between his fingers for a moment before tossing it into the river.]

[Lute finds a rock, stands up straight again, and attempts to skip it. Plop! It does nothing but go straight down. He laughs lightheartedly.]

It's not very easy, either.

[Huh. At least Simon's not complete fail, then.]

I guess it isn't. I wonder if anybody else around here knows how.

[He scratched his head, thinking.]

I'm sure there's someone.

Maybe I'll ask around later.

Mm, good idea. [He looks at the water.] This kind of thing, it's the type of activity you do when you're lost in thought. Is something one your mind?

...Maybe. [He tosses another stone, eyes downcast.]

[He smiles a little at him and tries to toss another stone. He fails again.]

When I've got a lot on my mind, I try to learn and practice new spells. Or I go out for a nice, long walk.

New spells? You know magic?

Yes! I love magic.

That's pretty cool. I've never learned magic.

Is there no magic in your world?

Not really. I'd never seen it before coming here.

[He smiles. One of the birds flutters off.]

There seems to be quite a few people without magic in their worlds. Though, I suppose that means I get a chance to show them something they've never seen before!

...Will you show me a spell then?

Of course! [A smile is more than enough to convince Lute to share his magic. He taps his chin in thought, then turns to the water and chants quietly in a strange tongue. The strip of water in front of them changes to a sheet of ice.]

[And since Simon can't remember even seeing ice, he's instantly fascinated by it.]
